USA News | Heavy Rainfall: New Jersey Declares a State of Emergency, New York Inundated by Floods

New Jersey and New York City have been hit hard by heavy rain accompanied by flash flooding, causing major disruptions in these densely populated areas. Given the gravity of the situation, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy declared a state of emergency in his state this morning via his official account on X (formerly Twitter).

Flooding and Emergency Measures

The consequences of the severe weather were felt quickly. In New York City, several subway stations were flooded, severely disrupting public transportation. In response, New York authorities set up cooling centers to accommodate those affected and provide them with a safe and cool space. The New York City Department of Emergency Management issued a traffic alert, noting that runoff from the storm caused the Bronx River to rise rapidly, reaching a moderate flood stage of approximately 3.7 feet early this morning

An Alarming Climate Context

These phenomena are part of a broader context of increased climate variability. Experts emphasize that the frequency and intensity of these events are significantly increasing, with serious consequences for the environment and local populations.

After yesterday's heavy rains, the weather forecast predicts mostly dry weather today. However, a few isolated showers or a thunderstorm remain possible this afternoon or evening. Temperatures are expected to be mild, with highs around 27°C. However, parts of New York City, northeastern New Jersey, western Connecticut, and Lower Manhattan could experience a heat index as high as 35°C.

Vigilance Remains Required

Authorities recommend that residents remain vigilant and follow official instructions. Regular updates are being issued by emergency and weather services to inform residents of the evolving situation and the safety measures to be taken.

As the waters begin to recede, the cleanup and damage assessment are underway. Local authorities are already working to coordinate recovery efforts and disaster relief.
