A tragic school shooting unfolded at Evergreen High School in Jefferson County, Colorado, on Wednesday afternoon, leaving one student dead and two others hospitalized. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect — a student at the school — opened fire on classmates before turning the gun on himself.
The shooting occurred at approximately 12:24 p.m. local time. Authorities confirmed later that the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Three students were transported to area hospitals in critical condition, including the shooter. By Wednesday evening, one of the victims was released in stable condition, while another remains hospitalized in critical condition.
A fourth student was also taken to a hospital with an unspecified injury, though details of their condition have not yet been disclosed.
Law Enforcement Response
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the shooter was armed with a revolver. Following the incident, hundreds of officers swept through the school campus to ensure no additional threats were present.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI both joined the investigation. FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized that the agency was working closely with local authorities to ensure community safety.
Parents were directed to reunite with their children at Bergen Meadow Elementary School, located nearby.
Officials React to the Violence
Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his heartbreak in a public statement, saying:
“My thoughts go out to the victims and their families as they deal with this senseless act of violence.”
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jacki Kelley called the situation “the scariest thing imaginable” during a press briefing. She declined to release the shooter’s identity, age, or gender, stating:
“I don’t even know if our suspect is old enough to drive.”
Authorities have requested warrants to search both the suspect’s home and school locker as part of the ongoing investigation.
