New York City – July 28, 2025 — A deadly mass shooting shook Midtown Manhattan Monday evening when Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man originally from Hawaii, opened fire inside the high-rise office building at 345 Park Avenue, killing four individuals and injuring several others before taking his own life.

The Shooter: Shane D. Tamura

Shane Tamura, who had lived in Las Vegas and attended high schools in Southern California, including Granada Hills Charter and Golden Valley High School, was described as having a history of mental health issues. Investigators discovered multiple firearms, ammunition, and prescription medications belonging to Tamura inside his vehicle, which was double-parked outside the building.

He traveled across the country from Las Vegas to New York City in the days leading up to the attack.

Timeline of the Attack

At approximately 6:30 p.m. (ET) on Monday, Tamura exited a BMW parked near 345 Park Avenue, wearing a ballistic vest and carrying an AR-15-style rifle. He entered the building’s lobby, fatally shooting three people including NYPD Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old Bangladeshi immigrant, father of two with a third child on the way. He then made his way to the 33rd floor, where he shot and killed one more person before dying of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Victims

The deceased include:

  • Officer Didarul Islam, NYPD, 36
  • Wesley LePatner, a Blackstone employee
  • Two other civilians

An NFL employee was critically wounded and remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The Target: NFL Headquarters and CTE Grievance

Authorities believe Tamura intended to attack the NFL headquarters, which is housed inside 345 Park Avenue, along with major firms like Blackstone, KPMG, and Rudin Management. According to Mayor Eric Adams, Tamura may have taken the wrong elevator bank, leading him to the 33rd floor instead of his intended destination.

A rambling note found on his body mentioned CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy)—a brain condition associated with repeated head trauma in contact sports like football. Though Tamura never played professionally in the NFL, he blamed the league for his neurological symptoms and distress.

City and Law Enforcement Response

Mayor Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch held a press conference late Monday night, assuring the public that there is no ongoing threat. The NYPD 47th Precinct is leading the investigation, with support from federal agencies.

Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage and digital evidence to better understand Tamura’s motives and timeline. The building remains closed as forensic teams complete their investigation.

A Community in Mourning

This incident marks one of the deadliest shootings in New York City in recent memory. The Blackstone Group, NFL, and KPMG have issued condolences, and flags will fly at half-staff throughout the city.

Mayor Adams called the shooting “a senseless act of violence driven by anger, illness, and misinformation,” and praised the fast response of law enforcement, especially the fallen officer, Didarul Islam.
