Saint-Marc, May 25, 2024 – Frédérick Bergmann, 65, of Tampa, has been sentenced to nine years in prison for his involvement in the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse. Bergmann was convicted of shipping bulletproof vests used by the mercenaries in the attack, violating U.S. federal laws regarding the supply of military equipment.
Federal prosecutors revealed that Bergmann shipped the vests, misrepresenting them as school supplies and medical X-ray vests. Although he claimed he was unaware the equipment would be used in the assassination, his guilty plea to illegally exporting military equipment saved him from a life sentence. As a result, he was sentenced to nine years in prison.
During his trial, Bergmann expressed regret, apologizing to his family, the judge, and the Haitian people. He expressed his wish to be able to turn back time and correct his actions.
The investigation into the assassination of Jovenel Moïse, which shook Haiti, continues to progress. Bergmann's conviction joins the list of individuals convicted in the United States in connection with the murder.
