After days of anticipation and speculation, Haiti's Presidential Transitional Council has finally elected its president. Edgard Leblanc Fils, advisor to the January 30, 2023 Collective, was appointed by a majority of four members to fill this crucial position in the country's political transition.
Tuesday, April 30, 2024, was eagerly awaited at the Villa d'Accueil, where the Council had met to elect its president. As the scheduled election approached without anything happening, a majority finally formed in favor of Edgard Leblanc Fils, supported by Smith Augustin, Gérald Gilles, Emmanuel Vertilaire, and himself, as the representative of the January 30 agreement.
This choice is part of a desire for cohesion within the Council, with an agreement also reached to appoint the former Minister of Sports and Civic Action, Fritz Bélizaire, to the post of Prime Minister of the transitional government.
This decision comes as the security situation in the metropolitan region continues to deteriorate. The nine members of the Council recently began their activities, after being installed more than four days ago. Yesterday, Monday, a working meeting was held with senior officials from the Police and the General Staff of the Haitian Armed Forces (FADH) to discuss emergency measures needed to ensure the security of the population.
In his speech following his election, Edgard Leblanc Fils expressed the Council's determination to return the country to the path of democracy and restore peace and stability. This step marks a new chapter in Haiti's political transition process, and expectations are high for the concrete actions the Council will undertake to address the challenges facing the country.
