As part of the commemoration of the 220th anniversary of its independence, Haiti received a message of support and solidarity from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation. In this note, the Ministry revisited Haiti's history, strongly condemning past interference and occupation, as well as the neocolonial practices that persist in the country.
The Republic of Haiti achieved a historic feat in 1804 by becoming the first state in Latin America and the Caribbean to free itself from colonial oppression and embark on a path of sovereign development. However, this path was marred by decades of foreign interference and direct intervention, including a military occupation by the United States Armed Forces from 1915 to 1934.
The Russian Ministry expressed concern about the current challenges facing Haiti, particularly the complex criminal situation fueled by external factors. It strongly condemned the neocolonial practices that have repeatedly impacted Haiti, stressing the importance of respecting national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs, in accordance with the principles of international law enshrined in the United Nations Charter.
Furthermore, the Russian Federation is committed to deepening political dialogue with Haiti and expanding cooperation in various fields such as trade, economics, science, technology, humanitarian aid, and culture. Haitian students currently benefit from educational programs at Russian universities funded by the federal budget, thus strengthening educational ties between the two nations.
On this occasion, Russia congratulated the Haitian people on this important anniversary and conveyed its wishes for peace, prosperity and success in resolving their internal problems.
This diplomatic note marks a significant sign of support for Haiti at a crucial moment in its history and confirms the desire to strengthen relations between the two countries for a promising future.
